Cascade is a one-movement work which is an ongoing musical statement intended to invoke the mood and feel of blues and jazz within a structured classical setting. A main theme is used throughout the piece but intertwined are other thematic ideas that in some way or other are related to the original. The title is meant not only in reference to several thematic ideas "cascading" in and out of the piece and even at times overlapping each other, but also to indicate a free flowing of quasi-improvisational moments by the guitar over theme related harmonies by the brass and strings with percussion. The saxophone is also employed in such a setting.

"The list of successful attempts to meld the guitar with larger ensembles is not too long. Barring amplification, its voice is not large, and issues of balance remain a continuing concern. In this century, are the Sexter Mystique of Villa-Lobos, the aforementioned works of Schoenberg and Webern, the ubiquitous Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez (which solves the problem by rarely having all the forces sounding together), and perhaps some of the works by such British composers as Maxwell Davies, Bedford and Dodgson. Here is a new example, one with a clearly American voice. Cascade is not the kind of piece that reveals all of its secrets on a single hearing.
