Francois Couperin (1668 - 1733) was the towering composer for harpsichord in Baroque France. The best known member of a musical family, at age 17 he was the organist at St. Gervaise in Paris and, in 1693, won the post of organist in Louis XIV's Chapelle Royale.

William Byrd (1543 - 1623) was one of the giants of Elizabethan music. Byrd, a Catholic in Anglican England, composed sacred works for both churches. Byrd was uncommonly versatile leaving memorable madrigals, songs, liturgical pieces and works for instrumental ensemble.

Born in 1949, Brazilian Francisco Araujo is the youngest composer represented on this recording. After beginning guitar study with his father, Araujo worked with Jose Alves de Silva in Sao Paulo and graduated from the Sao Caetano do Sul Conservatory.

Trained as a flutist as well as a composer, Will Gay Bottje (b. 1925) studied under Vittorio Giannini, Nadia Boulanger, and Henk Badings. His work has been eclectic, ranging from electronic music to the "Songs from the Land Between the Rivers" drawing on folktunes from the area near Southern Illinois University at Carbondale where is Professor Emeritus in composition.
